The free stop in Iceland
The Reykjavik stop costs nothing extra if you fly Icelandair across the Atlantic. Its stopover programme lets you break a flight between North America and Europe in Iceland for up to seven nights at no extra airfare, and you book it with the flight. Three nights is enough for the Golden Circle and a soak in a hot spring before London.
Making it longer
Bangkok is the natural place to add time. It's the cheapest stop on the route to stay in, and from there Chiang Mai, the islands, Cambodia and Laos are all a short flight or an overnight train away. Add a second stop in Asia and it all still fits on one ticket.
