RTW OFFER: Here are two RTW trips, to say: "I've done it!". In 2012 they came with hotels and city tours included. Today AirTreks sells the flights, and the estimate at the top of this page is for those; you book the rest yourself.

In 10 days: London, Tokyo, Auckland, San Francisco, London

Four continents in ten days is fast. Once you take out the time on planes, you get about two days each in Tokyo, Auckland and San Francisco. The long legs are nonstop: Air New Zealand flies Tokyo Narita to Auckland once a day in about 11 hours, and Auckland to San Francisco in about 12.

It is a trip for bragging rights, not for seeing a country. If you have three weeks instead of ten days, the same ticket with longer stops is a much better trip.

In 20 days: London, Reykjavik, Toronto, New York, London

Strictly, this one isn't round the world. It never crosses the Pacific. It is a good first long trip, though, and cheap to fly.

Icelandair lets you stop in Iceland for up to seven nights on a transatlantic ticket at no extra airfare, and it flies nonstop from Reykjavik to Toronto. From Toronto to New York, skip the plane: Amtrak's Maple Leaf runs once a day in about 12.5 hours. It stops on both sides of the border at Niagara Falls, where everyone gets off for border control.
