The route
Itinerary: Colosseum, Rome, Italy. Stay in London, England. Chichén Itzá, Yucatán, Mexico. Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru. Stay in Sydney, Australia. The Great Wall, Beijing, China. Taj Mahal, Agra, India. Petra, Jordan.
Flights: Rome, London, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Sydney, Beijing, Delhi, Amman and back to London. In 2012 that ticket started at £3,400.
One change we'd make now. Mexico City is a long way from Chichén Itzá, and Cancún and Mérida are both much closer. Our other Seven Wonders route flies into Cancún and skips London and Sydney. Book these ahead
Machu Picchu sells every ticket for a set circuit and entry time, and lets in 4,500 people a day, or 5,600 on high-season dates, which include 19 June to 2 November. Buy on the official site, machupicchu.gob.pe, two or three months ahead if you're going in that window.
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, when the mosque inside is used for prayers. It opens half an hour before sunrise. Foreign visitors pay 1,100 rupees, plus 200 to go inside the main mausoleum.
At Petra, visitors who stay the night in Jordan pay 50 JD for one day, 55 for two and 60 for three, used on consecutive days. The Jordan Pass covers Petra and waives the Jordanian visa fee.
